Biographical notes:

Henry Mahler resided with his family in New London, Iowa before enlisting with the 6th Iowa Infantry (Company I) at the beginning of the Civil War. He served for nearly 3 years in the western theater. In 1864 he re-enlisted and was assigned to Sherman's Army at the beginning of the Army's March to the Sea. Mahler was captured by rebel forces on October 25, 1864. After the war Mahler returned to New London. He farmed for a few years before accepting a position as a traveling salesman for a road building and grading machine firm.
