Biographical notes:

Edward Mallory Almond (1892-1979), born Luray, Virginia, and commissioned into the infantry in 1916 after earning a B.S. from the Virginia Military Institute, he served more than 35 years in the military. He earned degrees from the Command and General Staff School in 1930, the Army War College in 1934, and the Naval War College in 1940. Later, in 1951, he served as commandant of the Army War College. His active duty service included the Meuse-Argonne and Aisne-Marne Offensives in France during WWI with the 4th Division. Made a brigadier general in March 1942, he continued service as assistant division commander and then commanding general of the 93rd infantry division March 1942-August 1945. During that time, he rose to the rank of major general. He was then commanding general of the 2nd Infantry division. During the Korean War, he served X Corps August 1950-July 1951, retiring as lieutenant general in January 1953. Honors included the Distinguished Service Cross, two Distinguished Service Medals, two Silver Stars, three Distinguished Flying Crosses, two Bronze Stars, sixteen Air Medals, three Commendation Ribbons, and the Purple Heart.
