Regiment organized at Elmira, N.Y., 20 May 1861, from the 65th and 74th Militia. Men were recruited principally from Erie County. The regiment left the state on 18 June 1861, and saw service in Maryland and Virginia, including McDowell's advance on Richmond, Pope's Campaign, Bull Run, and Antietam. The regiment was mustered out 18 May 1863.
