Biographical notes:

Hunter Liggett (b. March 21, 1857, Reading, Pa.-d. Dec. 30, 1935, San Francisco, Calif.), U.S. Army officer, graduated from West Point in 1879, and for the next twenty years served in various infantry assignments, including in the Montana and Dakota Territories. He later served in Cuba and in the Philippines. After graduating from the Army War College, he was first appointed director, then president of the College (1913). He served as commander of the Department of the Philippines before assuming command of the 41st Infantry Division, and then the I Corps, in France during World War I. In October 1918, he took command of the First Army, and remained in command in occupied Germany until April 1919, moving to command of the Third Army. He retired in 1921.
