Henry William Massingham was born in Norwich in 1860. At the age of seventeen, he joined the Eastern Daily Press as a reporter and, in 1888, moved to The Star, becoming editor for several months in 1890. In 1891, he was appointed editor of the Labour World and in the following year joined the Daily Chronicle, eventually editing the newspaper between 1895 and 1899. For the next eight years he worked for the Manchester Guardian and the Daily News. In March 1907, Massingham was appointed editor of The Nation, using the journal to campaign for a negotiated peace during the First World War. He remained editor until his resignation in 1923. He died in Cornwall in 1924.
