Macky Auditorium, built through a gift of some $300,000 from the estate of Boulder businessman Andrew J. Macky received in 1907, was finally completed in 1922. The auditorium contained 2,500 theater-style seats; the building also contained administrative offices for the university.

The book Colorado and Its People (LeRoy Hafen, ed., c1948) notes that "on July 4, 1891, W. S. Stratton staked the Independence claim that was to raise him from poverty to affluence." (v. 1, p. 471).
