Biographical notes:
Joan was enslaved by George Washington at Dogue Run Farm in Virginia, part of the Mount Vernon estate. She may have been married to, and her children fathered by, Ben; Joan's daughter Betty was referred to as Ben's Bett in 1799. She had 3 surviving children in 1786: Aggy, Simon, and Bett. She died between 1782 and 1786.
