Wright Morris was an American author and photographer, who has generated an acclaimed yet neglected body of work . Born in Central City, Nebraska, his early childhood was itinerant and unsettled, inculcating him with an appreciation for the lives of ordinary Americans. He attended several colleges, never taking a degree, and joined the Lost Generation of American artists in Europe. He created and exhibited photo-texts, character sketches accompanied by photographs, and began writing novels. His work was valued by other writers and he received numerous grants, fellowships, and awards, but seldom enjoyed popular attention. In addition to novels and photo-texts, he wrote essays, short stories, literary criticism, and memoirs, and lectured on literature at colleges and universities throughout the United States.
