Faulkner, Virginia, 1913-1980

Virginia Faulkner was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, on 1 March 1913. After graduating with honors from Lincoln High School in 1928, she attended the University of Nebraska from 1928-1930. She went to Rome to study at Miss Moxley's School from 1930-1931 and then attended Radcliffe from 1932-1933. She did not obtain a degree from these two institutions. Faulkner got a job writing for the Washington Post in 1933 and stayed for one year before becoming the Associate Editor of Town and Country from 1934-1935. She also worked as a scenarist for Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM) Studios from 1935-1938. Faulkner married Everett Weil in 1935 but the marriage was annulled after six days. She returned to Nebraska and taught English until 1956, when she became the Assistant Editor of the University of Nebraska Press. Within three years Faulkner became Editor-in-Chief of the press, a position she held until her death on 15 September 1980. She also served as fiction editor of the Prairie Schooner . She wrote several books, including My Hey-Day, The Barbarians, and Friends and Romans . In 1979 Faulkner received the Mari Sandoz Award from the Nebraska State Library Association. That same year she received the Willa Cather Pioneer Memorial Award for scholarly research and the promotion of Cather's works.
