Biographical notes:
Thomas Hart Armbruster (born 1958) is a retired American diplomat. He notably served as U.S. Ambassador to the Marshall Islands (2012-2016).
Born in El Paso, Texas and raised in Maryland, Armbruster earned a bachelor's degree from McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland and a Masters Degree in Conflict Resolution from St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas. He worked as a radio and television journalist before joining the Foreign Service in 1988.
During his foreign service career, Armbruster had postings in Helsinki, Moscow, Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, Washington, D.C., Dushanbe, Tajikistan, and Vladivostok, Russia with temporary assingments in Kabul, Afghanistan, and New York City before undertaking his ambassadorship in Majuro. Appointed U.S. Ambassador to the Marshall Islands on August 3, 2012, he presented his credentials on September 6. He left this post on May 25, 2016. In February 2019, he was named to the board of directors for Strategies for International Development.
Armbruster and his wife, Kathy Chandler Armbruster, have two children. In addition to English, he speaks Russian and Spanish.
