Yosemite National Park (Agency : U.S.)
Variant namesHistory notes:
Yosemite National Park is located in the western Sierra Nevada of Central California and managed by the U.S. National Park Service. It covers 747,956 acres. The park was central to the development of the Untied States national park idea. Galen Clark lobbied to protect Yosemite Valley from development and President Abraham Lincoln signed the Yosemite Grant in 1864. "Yosemite" (meaning "killer" in Miwok) originally referred to the name of a Native American tribe which was driven out of the area by the Mariposa Battalion.
