Emilio Aguinaldo y Famy (1869-1964) was a Filipino who led the insurrection against Spain, and later the fight for independence against the United States, until his capture in 1901 and his consequent oath of allegiance to the United States.

Bulacan Province, located north of Manila on the island of Luzon, was a center of the Philippine revolution against Spain in the 1890s. The revolutionaries opposed the friars of the Catholic Church, who were under the authority of Archbishop Nozaleda in Manila. When the Spanish-American War broke out in the spring of 1898, Nozaleda rallied Filipinos against the Americans while the leader of the revolutionaries, Emilio Aguinaldo, joined forces with them. On 12 June, Aguinaldo proclaimed the independence of the Philippines, making Bulacan the temporary capital of the First Philippine Republic. Nearly all the territory in the Philippines had come into the hands of the revolutionaries by that time, except for Manila, which was captured directly by United States forces on August 13. Nozaleda remained Archbishop of Manila until resigning in 1902.
