Cullen Bryant Gosnell, educator and author, was born 14 December 1893, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and died 16 August 1963, in Atlanta, Georgia. He received an A.B. degree from Wofford College (1916) and a Ph.D. from Princeton University (1928); served in the U.S. Navy and reserves (1918-1921); and taught at other southern colleges before coming to Emory University (1927), where he established the Institute of Citizenship for the study of public problems in the Southeast, was active in professional associations, and wrote or co-authored several books and articles before retiring in 1962.
