Biographical notes:

Founded 1849. Public utilities company. Peoples Gas Light & Coke Company was founded in 1848 and became Chicago's first gas company in 1850. Under the presidency of C.K.G. Billings, Jr. (1895 to 1910), Peoples merged with twelve other companies to become a major power in public utilities in the Chicago area. In 1913, Samuel Insull became chairman of the Board for Peoples and later served as the company's president from 1919 to 1932. During this time Insull was involved with universal military training, the United States War Industries Board, the establishment of income tax, labor relations, and the employment of women.
