John Gilbert was born in England about 1805, and came to the United States sometime before 1833,when he was living in Cortland,N.Y. In that year he removed to Oswego, N.Y., and thence to Detroit. In July, 1834, he went to Mt.Clemens. On Oct. 3, 1826, he had married Martha. Entries in his diary suggest that he was a carpenter by trade,but more interested in preaching and teaching.
