May Lamberton Becker, editor and lecturer, was born in New York and educated at home as well as high school. Upon graduation she joined a small suburban newspaper, and in 1907 began giving lectures on Victorian literature. The lectures led to an offer from the New York evening post to do a literary column, which led to a "question and answer" column on recommended books.

Becker also served as editor of several newspapers including the.

Literary review and the New York herald tribune. Becker's books include A reader's guide book (1923) and Choosing books for children (1937).
