Educator.
Free arrived in Dakota in the early 1880s. In 1889 he was appointed to the Dakota Territory Board of Education and was hired by Yankton College as Professor of Mineralogy and Geology. He later served on the South Dakota Board of Regents, the Board of Trustees of the University of South Dakota, as secretary of the American College and Education Society of the Congregational Church in Boston, and president of Yankton College.
