Author and professor of psychology at Loyola University of Chicago. Born in New York, Kennedy studied at Maryknoll College and Maryknoll Seminary in Chicago, Illinois. He was ordained a Maryknoll priest in 1955 and earned a Ph. D. from Catholic University (1962). He was laicized in 1977. He married Sara Charles Kennedy, with whom he co-authored Defendant in 1985.
Kennedy has written over thirty books on religion and psychology, two novels, a play, and a biography of Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley.
