Opie Percival Read was an American author and journalist, best known for his humorous novels. Born and raised in Tennessee, he apprenticed with a newspaper and attended Neophagen College, later travelling around the country before settling in Chicago in 1887. He worked as a journalist and typesetter, before founding several successive newspapers of his own, culminating in the Arkansas Traveler, which printed many of his humorous regional sketches and became very popular. He later published numerous novels and collections of short stories in a similar vein, relying on dialect and southern stereotypes to flesh out the tales he had heard in his youth. His engaging manner and endless store of anecdotes made him a popular lecturer.
