William North, 1755-1836, a general during the American Revolution, aide-de-camp to Baron Steuben, at Yorktown, in 1781 and was present when Washington bade farewell to his officers at Fraunces Tavern. In 1783, he moved to Duanesburgh, N. Y. married Mary Duane, James Duane's daughter on October 14, 1787 and by her had four children, Mary, Hannah, James and William. He served as Speaker of the State Assembly 1795-1796, 1810 and served as U.S. Senator in 1798 when appointed by the Governor to fill John Sloss Hobart's seat. He voted for the Alien and Sedition Acts while a Senator (Federalist) served as an adjutant general of provisional army 1798-1800, and as a member of the commission western canals (1810).
North was born at Ft. Frederic, Pemaquid, Maine, the son of John and Elizabeth (Pitson) North and died at Duanesburgh on January 3, 1836. He was buried in the family vault at Christ Episcopal Church, Duanesburgh.
