Treat was a San Francisco lawyer, banker, and amateur sportsman and photographer. He was a founding member of the Pacific Coast Amateur Photographic Association, which later became the California Camera Club. He was also a public speaker, as well as editor and/or contributor to several newspapers and magazines, including the Sausalito Advocate, Western Field, Sunset Magazine, and Camera Craft. He was married in 1892 to Helen Augusta Bosqui, daughter of the printer Edward Bosqui. They had two children, Laura and Van Allen Treat.

Treat was a San Francisco lawyer, sportsman, and amateur photographer, born in Virginia City, Nev. He passed the Calif. Bar Exam in 1895, served as Director of the Olympic Club, and helped to found the Pacific Coast Amateur Photographic Association, which later became the California Camera Club. He married Helen Bosqui, daughter of Edward Bosqui, and had two children, Laura and Van Allen Treat.
