Historian, lecturer and author Tertius Chandler was born in 1915 in Massachusetts, and received his formal education at Harvard and UC Berkeley. Best known for his 1987 book "Four Thousand Years of Urban Growth: An Historical Census," Chandler was also a frequent letter-writer to newspapers and other periodicals on a variety of topics, including religion, history, and education. He died in Berkeley, California, on May 17, 2000. His unpublished autobiography is housed at the Berkeley Historical Society.
