Biographical notes:

Martin Bell was a poet, born in Southampton, Hampshire, England on February 2, 1918. Educated at Taunton's School, Southampton, and the University of Southampton where he received a B.A. (honours) in English. Founder of the Group and involved in its reincarnation as the Writer's Workshop. From 1935 to 1939 he was a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain and from 1939 to 1946 he served in the Royal Engineers. Bell taught in London schools from 1956 to 1967. He was a Gregory Fellow at Leeds University from 1967 to 1969. He also writes under the pen name Titus Oates.
