Biographical notes:
Israel N. Prince (c.1826-1863) was born in Maine and traveled to the Nebraska Territory in 1850. He worked briefly on the Burlington Railroad and other transient jobs with little success before enlisting in the 1st Nebraska Volunteers in June 1861. He served in campaigns throughout Missouri, Tennessee, and Mississippi, and participated in the Battle of Shiloh (1862). Prince was killed in camp at Capt Giradeau, Missouri, by an accidental firearm discharge on May 8, 1863.
