Samuel Smith was a Quaker minister from Philadelphia. He was born to Robert and Phebe Smith of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, on the the 13th of 6th month 1737, New Style (2nd of the 4th month, Old Style). Because he was of too delicate a constition for laborious work, he moved to Philadelphia in 1763. In the same year he married Mary Woolston, the daughter of John Woolston of Middletown. Smith grew to oppose the free use and sale of alcohol. He was recognized as a minister in 1770. Smith traveled frequently in the ministry, and his journeys took him to New England as well as London and Liverpool.
