De La Guerra served at the Presidio in Santa Barbara, becoming captain in 1817 and commandant in 1827 serving until 1842. From land grants and purchases, De La Guerra became owner of over 1/2 million acres in present Santa Barbara, Ventura, Marin, and Sacramento counties, California.
Luis Antonio Martinez came to California in 1798 and was expelled in a conflict with the goverment in 1830.
