Wilfred Hudson Osgood, (1875-1947) was born on December 8, 1875, in Rochester, New Hampshire. He studied at Stanford University, receiving his bachelor's degree in 1899; and receiving his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1918. He started his career as a biologist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1897, where he continued to work until 1909. He was also in charge of the U.S. biological investigation in Canada from 1899 to 1909. From there he moved on to the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago where he was an assistant curator of mammalogy and ornithology until 1921, when he became the curator of zoology until he retired in 1940. Places he conducted biological explorations and surveys included areas of North and South America, Venezuela, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Ethiopia and Indo-China. He died on June 20, 1947.
