Biographical notes:

Elijah H.C. Cavins (1832-1910), a lawyer and politician, lived near Bloomfield in Greene County, Indiana. He served with the 14th Indiana Volunteer Regiment, rising to the rank of colonel. He was appointed Adjutant General for southern Indiana in 1864. After the Civil War he was active in the Grand Army of the Republic and served on the Indiana Battlefield Commission for Antietam and Gettysburgh.
