Kalumburu Benedictine Mission
Biographical notes:
For over seventy years (1908-1981) the Benedictine Order operated a mission for the Aboriginal people of the East Kimberleys first at Drysdale River and later (1937) at Kalumbaru. In the initial exploration of 1906 Abbot Torres of New Norcia inspected uncharted coastal areas between Broome and Wyndham. Two years later he established a mission for Aborigines of the area in the Benedictine tradition.
