Burleigh was an abolitionist and reformer, associated with the Garrisonian wing of the anti-slavery movement. He was editor of the Unionists, 1835-37, wrote for the Liberator, edited the Pennsylvania Freeman after 1844, and served as the secretary of the American Anti-Slavery Society and editor of its annual reports.
