Naomi Shihab Nye, born 1952 of a Palestinian father and American mother, grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, Jerusalem, and San Antonio, Texas. She graduated from Trinity University (San Antonio, Tex.) in 1974 and is married to photographer Michael Nye. She has published several books of poetry, writings for children, and the young adult novel Habibi, and wrote as a columnist for Organica: A Magazine of Art and Activism. Nye has also worked as a visiting writer in schools at all grade levels. Her university teaching experience includes the University of California at Berkeley, University of Texas at San Antonio, and the Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas at Austin. In 2001, Nye received a presidential appointment to the National Council of the National Endowment for the Humanities. She has won several awards, including four Pushcart Prizes and a Guggenheim Fellowship. She was a National Book Award Finalist in 2002.
