Biographical notes:
Susan Bogert Warner was born in New York; her father, a successful lawyer, lost most of his wealth and property in 1837. Susan began writing to help support her family, and her first book, the sentimental domestic novel Wide, wide, world, eventually achieved almost unparalleled success and popularity, rivalling Little women and Uncle Tom's cabin. She also published children's stories, sometimes written with her sister Anna, often using pseudonyms.
