Leibniz was born on July 1, 1646 in Leipzig, Germany; he entered Leipzig Univ. and received the degree of doctor of law in 1666; became a philosopher, mathematician, and political advisor; became known as both a metaphysician and a logician, and invented differential and integral calculus; his major writings include: New physical hypothesis (1671), New method for the greatest and the least (1684), Discourse on metaphysics (1686), New system (1695), On the ultimate origin of things (1697), and On nature itself (1698); he died on Nov. 14, 1716 in Hanover, Germany.
