Description of the first attempts to order the plant communities of South Florida were published by DeBrahm in 1772 and 1773. Although DeBrahm wrote a guide to navigators in 1772, his final report to England is more complete. In the final report he recognized four major communities: swamp, savannah or meadow, pineland and hammock. Included in the first were mangrove swamp, maple swamp, cypress swamp and loblolly bay swamp.

He recognized three pinelands that have no obvious relationship with classifications used later: low pine/wire grass; middling pine/wire grass and bunch grass; and high pine/bunch grass. Perhaps the first was scrub and the last sand hill pine. His last category, hammock, was one of the early records of usage of this word of Arabic/English origin.
