Biographical notes:

Denis B. Cashman was an Irish immigrant, worked as a journalist in Boston and partner of a printing firm. Prior to his immigration to the United States, Cashman participated in the Irish Republican Brotherhood (Fenians). After being arrested, he was transported in 1867 to a penal colony in Fremantle, Western Australia. While it is unclear how Cashman left Australia, it is thought that he escaped with his friend and literary collaborator, the poet John Boyle O'Reilly.
