Peter Olaus Okkelberg was born in Goodhue, Minnesota on November 12, 1880. He received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Minnesota, and his Ph.D. degree in zoology from the University of Michigan in 1918. After graduating from the University of Minnesota, Okkelberg came to the University of Michigan, first as an instructor in zoology, then after receiving his doctorate, as assistant professor (1918-1927), associate professor (1927-1929), as associate professor and executive secretary of the department (1929-1932), as professor and executive secretary of the department (1932-1933), as professor and secretary of the graduate school (1933-1936), as professor and assistant dean of the graduate school (1936-1947), and as professor and associate dean of the graduate school (1947-1951).
