Saltman, Paul

Biochemist and nutritionist born in 1928 and educated at the California Institute of Technology (B.S. in 1949, Ph. D. in 1953). Saltman taught biochemistry at the University of Southern California from 1953 to 1967, when he accepted a position as Provost of UCSD's Revelle College. In 1972, Saltman was appointed UCSD's Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. He resigned from that position in 1980, returning to full-time teaching and research at UCSD. Saltman's research interests were largely concerned with basic chemistry of metal ions in biological systems and the nutritional role of trace metals. He earned awards for his teaching at both USC and UCSD. Saltman died in La Jolla on 27 August 1999.
