The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs has primary responsibility on the UCSD campus for all academic personnel and their research activities, graduate and undergraduate education, allocation of space and FTE, academic planning, recruitment and retention of faculty, and academic affirmative action. The office was established in 1972. Past incumbents of the position are Paul Saltman (1972-1980), John Miles (1980-1984), Harold Ticho (1984-1990), Marjorie Caserio (1990-1995), and Robert Dynes (1995-1996). In 1996 the position was elevated to Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
