Francesco Bartolozzi was an engraver, who popularized the stipple process. Born in Florence in either 1725 or 1727, he studied at the Accademia del Disegno in his native city. He learned engraving from Joseph Wagner. In 1764 he went to England and was appointed engraver to George, III. Bartolozzi became a Royal Academician in 1768. In 1802 he accepted a post as Director of the National Academy of Libson. He he died there in 1815. Bartolozzi was a student with Giovanni Battista Cipriani, and engraved many of the latters paintings.
