Gwen Harwood was born in Brisbane in 1920, went to Brisbane Girls' Grammar School and studied and taught music. She is married to Mr. F. W. Harwood, a Reader in English at the University of Tasmania. She has published two books of poetry, and written the libretto for six of Larry Sitsky's operas.

Gwen Harwood was born and educated in Brisbane where she was organist at All Saints Church. In 1945 she married and moved to Hobart where she lived until her death in 1995. Her poetry has been widely published since the early 1960's and she has also written libretti for several composers. Ann Jennings was a close personal friend over a period of 40 years.
