Shapcott has published more than 36 titles including collections of poems, essays, short stories, novels, books for young readers & a study of the artist Charles Blackman. He was Executive Director of the National Book Council between 1992 & 1997, & currently holds the chair of Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Adelaide.

Thomas Shapcott was a Harold White Fellow at the National Library of Australia in 2005. For his project he searched the Papers of Ray Mathew (MS 8264) for unpublished prose and poetry of Mathew with a view to future publication. In 2007 NLA published Uncollected prose of Ray Mathew : tense little lives.
