During the Mexican War, Haynie served as a lieutenant in the 6th Illinois Infantry, Co. C. He served in the Illinois House of Representatives, 1851-1852, and ran for Congress in 1862. In 1861, he raised and organized the 48th Illinois Infantry and served as its colonel until Nov. 1862 when he was appointed brigadier general, serving until that appointment expired in March 1863. Appointed Illinois adjutant general in January 1865, he held that office until he died in Springfield on 22 May 1868.

Haynie was Illinois Adjutant-General (1865-1868), and Strain was an Illinois state senator from Warren County (1865-1868).
Haynie died in Springfield, Ill., on 22 May 1868. He had been a lawyer, politician and a veteran of the Mexican and Civil Wars.
