Charles Carleton Coffin, 1823-1896, was born in Boscawen, NH. He became a surveyor, a telegraph and railroad expert and a reporter. During the Civil War, he wrote dispatches from the front for the Boston Journal by which he attained considerable fame. He served in the Massachusetts House in 1884 and 1885 and the Senate in 1890, but he was best known as an author of patriotic books for children and for his speeches. He was a board member of NEHGS and gave the oration at its fiftieth anniversary in 1895.

Master Sergeant Charles Naylor Coffin enlisted in the United States Army in 1933. He was assigned to Battery K, 64th Coast Artillery Regiment at Fort Shafter, Hawaiian Islands. Upon reenlistement, Coffin was assigned to Battery A, 59th Heavy Seacoast Artillery Regiment at Fort Mills, Corregidor, Philippines. He was reassigned to Hawaii in 1940 with the 617th Automotive Ordnance Battalion. During the latter part of the Korean War, Coffin served as Assistant Advisor to the 25th Quartermaster Railhead Battalion and later with the 12th Quartermaster Railhead Battalion, Republic of Korea Army. He retired from the Army in 1960.
