Biographical notes:

Amos Starr Cooke was born in Maine on January 8, 1816. After attending a meeting at which Rev. Jason Lee was lecturing, he was inspired to emigrate to Oregon. In 1839, Cooke and a group of 19 others set out for the region. He eventually took out a land claim in Yamhill County and married Mary Francis Scott at Lafayette, Oregon. Cooke was a Methodist layman with close ties to the Methodist missions. Amos Starr Cooke died on Feburary 3, 1895.
