Biographical notes:

Charles James was born in Earl's Barton, Northhamptonshire, England in 1880. He came to the United States in 1906 and was asked to join the faculty at the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts as Assistant Professor of Chemistry the same year. He then became Head of the Chemistry Department in 1912 and remained in that position until his death in 1928. He was internationally known for his work in the rare earths and for discovering several new compounds. The College became the University of New Hampshire in 1923.
