James Henry Breasted was a scholar, author, and explorer; as America's first Egyptologist, he pioneered the Oriental Instiutute at the University of Chicago. After graduating from Yale, he studied Egyptology in Berlin before teaching at the University of Chicago. During a long sabbatical from teaching he undertook the field work that formed the foundation of his reputation and scholarship, leading to a groundbreaking series of widely-read books and articles. His pioneering efforts, personal energy, and accomplishments as author and explorer made him one the the key historians of the early 20th century.
