McMaster, James Alphonsus, 1820-1886.
Biographical notes:
Convert to Catholicism; owner and editor of the New York Freeman's Journal and Catholic Register beginning in 1846; opponent of Protestantism and the policies of Abraham Lincoln. The journal was banned from the mails by the Postmaster General (August 1861 - April 1862) and McMaster was briefly imprisoned.
