Politician

Clayton, who was born in Delaware, served in the U.S. Senate (1828-1836, 1845-1848) and as the U.S. Secretary of State 1849-1850. During his political career he was close friends with Henry Clay (before 1848) and an advisor to Governor of Kentucky J.J. Crittenden.
