Biographical notes:
Leon F. Litwack was born in 1929 in Santa Barbara, California. He received a B.A. (1951) and Ph.D. (1958) from the University of California at Berkeley, where he also served as a professor in the History Department from 1965 to 2007. Litwack's scholarship focused on African-American history, and he won the Pulitzer Prize in 1980 for his book, Been in the Storm So Long: The Aftermath of Slavery.
