Biographical notes:

George Bernard Noble was born in 1892 in Florida. A Rhodes scholar at the University of Washington, he received his degree from Oxford University in 1915. After serving in World War I in the U.S. Army, he taught at several universities before coming to Reed in 1922. He earned a doctorate from Columbia University in 1935 and undertook many political and governmental assignments while at Reed before moving to the U.S. State Department in 1946. There, he oversaw the publication of the Foreign Relations of the United States series and then the preparation of background studies for the use of the Department of State and the Foreign Service. He wrote a volume on the Secretary of State, Christian A. Herter, published in 1970. He died in 1972.
